With the luxury of modern technology, now you do not have to go abroad to take a tour of the Louvre. Of course, it would be wonderful if you were able to visit in person, but if that is not possible, a virtual tour is a great alternative.

Well, this certainly sounds posh, unless you understand, of course, that the "club" that I am speaking about is Sam's Club (or Cost-Co will do). If you have a membership, this is a fantastic date idea. You can go all out, if you are daring enough, by dressing up just like you are going on a fancy date or bring it down a notch with sweats. So, here is the great part about a date at the "club", they have free samples of food so you can have some hors d'oeuvres. Munch your way through the aisles and check out some of the dream items you would like to have someday. Make a fun dream list together. You don't have to buy a thing and, in fact, it might be fun to try and get out of there without a purchase. There is an awesome aisle of kitchen gadgets, some have furniture and decorations, and they also have fantastic prices on jewelry! The best time to go is on the weekend since the best samples are out then. If you are still hungry on your way out, stop by the fancy restaurant upfront for their $2 hotdog and a drink special. Living in Arizona, what could I possibly know about snow? We have a few places that snow in the state, but lets be realistic, I can technically still put on a pair of shorts and get a 70* winter tan out by the pool in December. My only childhood memories of snow include heading to Lake Tahoe for a holiday and being bundled up layer by layer and then of course having garbage bags taped all around me to keep me from getting wet. Yes, we actually use to do that since we had no real winter, waterproof clothing like they do today. So, I may not be the top resource for snow games, but I have now spent a bit more time in the snow and I always enjoy finding unique games. One game that can be played in the snow is a homemade bocce ball game. Take artificial food coloring and mix it with a bit of water. Put it in a spray bottle and make a ring in the snow. One on each side of the play field. Now, find 6 balls, any size depending on how big you want to make the circle. Split up the teams in two and try to land all three of your balls in the circle. The other team then tries to knock them out. Play to 21 points. How dense the snow is will determine the weight of the ball you use. Normal bocce balls can be a bit heavier, so consider the plastic air balls if it is too powdery. Another game you can play is called "Around the Court". The "Court" is any rectangle area that can include your street or even just around your property line. One person stands in the middle of the play area with their hands next to their face making a blinder. That way, they can only see what is directly in front of them. The middle person counts to 10 (or 20 depending on the length of the field that must be run) in one direction, and then turns clockwise, anyone they see in their vision they call out "Micky, I see you behind the tree". The purpose of the game is to get all the way around the play area without getting called out. You can hide behind things, bury yourself in the snow or find ways to camouflage yourself from the middle man. The game finishes when one person gets around the court or all players are spotted. The first person out is the next middle man. Do you have any creative games that you play in the snow? If so, please leave a comment for our other viewers. Did you know that there is actually a website dedicated to letting people know where the photo booths are located all around the world? Well, there is, and that makes for a perfect ThemeTrip activity! Check the closest photo booth near you and arm yourselves with all the accessories you can find. Funny glasses, goofy hats, fake mustaches, custom signs, crazy clothes, and, of course, a fun attitude. This can be a great date idea, something to do with the kids, and some teens may even enjoy this activity with their friends. Set up a few poses with lots of props or just wing it. For a list of locations visit photobooths(dot)net New York is is one of the busiest places in the world on New Year's Eve. Cameras and news crews gather around Time Square to celebrate a new year's arrival. Tuning in virtually allows you to people watch as the crowds gather (no, you cannot see complete faces), see the action, hear the traffic sounds, and watch the ball drop right from your computer! Yes, I know they usually have it on TV, but this way you see it from a different angle as the crowds are gathering and the energy is building. Your virtual tour of Times Square in New York City does not have to be only on New Year's Eve, it can actually be anytime of the year. As I sat watching it while writing this up, I was able to count 6 Santas walking by, one Smurf, a Statue of Liberty dancer, and two firetrucks passing by. If nothing else, it makes you happy you are out of the cold and the traffic! To view Times Square go to the EarthCam(dot)com and direct it to Times Square. Nothing can be quite as adrenaline rushing as bidding on an item at a live auction. Hearing the booming voice scream "SOLD!" as the gavel hits the desk. Be careful, though, since you might get caught up in the auction and find yourself going home with a crazy old lamp that you would never want to display. A live auction can be a fun family activity or even a unique date idea. Sometimes they even serve some great hot dogs from the cart while you are watching the auction. Check your local listings and see when the next auction is happening. An estate auction is listed? Well, you never know what you will find there. I have been to many auctions from schools, to repossessions, and even a consignment auction and all had their own character, but were fun to watch even if I did not buy anything. There is a website called Auctionzip that has a list of upcoming auctions based on zip codes. Now, this sounds like a Merry, good time! Well, you have probably heard of Comic-Con but have you ever heard of SantaCon? This is just a fun-loving, get-together bar crawl that is in 41 countries to date and in 277 locations around the world. Each location has its own feel, but all have the same thing in common, you dress up like Santa! According to the Santacon website, you must assume that the event you are going to is adult-only unless specifically stated on the site map. You also must address everyone at the event as Santa and have a jolly ho-ho-ho in response. You do not have to dress up exactly as Santa, but rather your costume can be open to interpretation. Seriously, this sounds awesome! Tea parties can be both formal and informal. A lovely tea would be a great mother-daughter bonding afternoon to catch up on each others latest activities as well as a chance to invite your daughter's friends to get to know them better. The formal tea has very long roots in English tradition. In the 18th century, it was custom for high society ladies to accept callers with a morning tea. Coffeehouses in this time period were strictly off limits to ladies, so they met in their bedchambers to serve tea to their callers. While drinking tea is credited to Catharine of Braganza, for bringing the fashion of the serving tea into a social event, it has varying roots based on culture and serving styles. An informal tea can be during morning hours, an afternoon tea is usually served between 4pm-6pm, and a high tea is served between 5pm-7pm. Choose whether you want your tea to be an indoor gathering event or a garden party. Afternoon to Remember is a lovely website about all things tea, and even talks in depth about proper tea etiquette. According to their website "it is said that the afternoon tea tradition was established by Anne, Duchess of Bedford. She requested that light sandwiches be brought to her in the late afternoon because she had a “sinking feeling” during that time because of the long gap between meals. She began to invite others to join her and thus became the tradition". So, for your tea time, choose which type of tea tradition you will be serving. Sending out a formal invitation can add to the elegance and can certainly just be sent to your daughter requesting her presence at a formal tea. There are many companies that specialize in selling tea cups and you do not have to have your tea cups match, in fact, it can be more of a conversation starter to have different tea cups from which to choose. If you like to garage sale hop, this is perfect way to find adorable, and non matching tea cups with saucers. Serving finger-sized sandwiches, small pastries, and scones with clumped cream and lemon curd adds a nice touch. You can choose to make your tea informal or go all out with high fashion hats and tea dresses. Cucumber and cream cheese sandwiches: 1 loaf white bread 1/2 cup cream cheese (Depending on the palette of your guests you can use a chive cream cheese) You can always use unsalted butter as well. 1 thinly sliced English Cucumbers (less seeds) salt and pepper according to taste Spread the cream cheese evenly with cream cheese, cover one side with cucumber slices, salt and pepper to taste, put together and cut crust, then cut twice diagonally to create a triangle. Optional ingredients for your tea sandwiches: turkey- raspberry cream cheese cheese- use a little mayo and then your choice of cheese peanut butter and jelly- confirm no guest have allergies to peanut butter Peanut butter and banana brie and finely sliced apples chicken salad Artichoke/Parmesan spread Father and Son bonding time is an important opportunity to not only spend some valuable time together, but to also allow your son to learn how to safely use tools. Some of the projects they can work on can be easy, with simple materials like a paper boat to sail in the closest body of water, (yes, a bathtub will do) to a more grand project like a box car racer or a tree house. First, consider the age of your child. Is his attention span long enough for a week long project or will a few hours and then success be better spent quality time? If you are lucky enough to have multiple generations in your household (or even a grandparents visit), make sure to include grandpa. I did a bit of research on the internet and found some of the best answers that can help you on your chosen project. On Wikihow we found: Make a soapbox derby car Build a tree house Make a paper boat It looks like WikiHow really wins on their in depth explanations on building! A few weeks ago, my inbox pinged with an idea from one of our readers asking us to tour one of our local Dairy farms, (Yes, we read them all, some we can do right away, while others take a bit more planning). I thought, "wow, what a great idea" and I promptly began to scope out this gem of recommendation for us. What we found was that there are many different types of working dairies around the country and each offers its very own, unique experience. Some are more interactive than others, so you would get a lot out of visiting different ones as opposed to just sticking to one. Some dairies have tours, petting zoos, restaurants, picnic areas, hay rides around the dairy, and a few are even hands on. I have found a few across the country such as Dakin Dairy Farms and Shamrock Farms that do tours, but there are many more, so explore to your hearts content. |
