Rhode Island dog-friendly beach & Ferry

Are you looking ahead for a dog-friendly beach vacation this fall or summer?  Well if you are going to be anywhere near Rhode Island then Block Island is the place to go!  Approx. 12 miles off the coast of Rhode Island is a lovely little sanctuary that is accessible by plane and ferry.  Your canine companion can even ride free on the ferry.  We can ride inside deck on the slow boat or outside deck on the high-speed ferry.

This place is so friendly to us that as long as we are leashed we can go to just about any of the island's beaches. In certain locations and a specified times, the leashes can even come off.  As always, check before you go to make sure that the ferry's still allow us and what the new rules are. Check out the North Lighthouse as well as the Southeast Lighthouse when you go. I hear they are super cool.
According to this website:

" Block Island is a haven for dogs.  A vast majority of islanders have dogs. If you happen to see a dog without an owner remember:  There are no stray, homeless or feral dogs on the island.  Island dogs have a knack for appearing hungry and homeless, it's just an act!!

Water Dogs

If you have a dog that loves water, and you love competition, the Splash Dog events could be just what you are looking for. These events are held all over the US and take place most months of the year. Sure, there will be traveling involved if you want to rank up, but they are a great way to bond with your own best friend and you can take along your human family members. As a Hairless Terrier, I can't swim. I know, so sad right? But I do appreciate the members of my brethren that compete at these tournaments. They have individual rankings as well as multi-level titling so you can participate at only one and still see your name in bright lights. (Actually just on their website. But you can spin it anyway you want when you tell your other dog friends).

Even if your canine is not interested in competing, you might enjoy just like I did, the cool photos of the dogs on their website. They certainly all look like they are having a great time. Make sure and check them out!

Dogs can canoe and kayak too!

Since it is starting to get warm out again, I thought this might be a nice time to think about a canoe or kayak trip with your favorite pup.  Not only is it a good bonding idea, it can be a great outdoor activity with the whole family.

There are several companies that make canoes that work for including us canine.  I also researched some safety rules to share so you will know how to be safe before you head out on the open water. For those looking for more guidance, my human linked a few outfitters for you at the bottom of this post so you don't have to go looking for them yourself.

The most important thing to remember when taking us canoeing is to not tie us in the canoe in case something happens, most of us are really good swimmers, and, of course, since you would never forget our personal floatation device, we have a back up plan. Also, please make sure that we have enough space to sit or lie down since the journey will be much longer than we want to stand. There are several companies that make canoes that are good for including us.
Remember, not all dogs like water or are the temperament to enjoy a day kayaking or canoeing. So if you are considering it, take it slow and see if we even want to give it a try. Some of us will jump right on and make a day of it and others wont get anywhere near a plastic floating thing. Even if we do give it a try, stay close to shore the first time and see how we do once we are actually away from shore.

Outfitters:

If you are looking for a vacation get away on a canoe that includes your trusty best friend, there is this rig in Mendocino, California on the California redwood coast that accommodate us in their canoe rentals. Catch a Canoe states on their website that "Some canoes easily accommodate dogs. We provide water bowls and fresh water (the estuary is
an inlet and salty), for paddlers' dogs."  They are located in
Mendocino, California.

Cheshire, CT  has an outfit called  Smartydog Kayaking .

Dog Beach, in Fort Myers, Florida, has a Kayak with Canine program so you and your best pal can paddle off into the sunset together. There are no restroom facilities for humans, and no running water for either species, so come prepared.

Let's head to Huntington Beach

With only a 10-minute drive from Disneyland, this city makes a perfect stop for the whole family, especially the canine members.  Huntington Beach is known for their dog-friendly attitude. There are so many things you can do and include us, I think it should be on my humans' list for our next vacation. From a cool dog park in Central Park, a beach that allows us to be leash-off, to some friendly restaurant patios, and even a few hotels that love us.

Huntington Beach  A super dog-friendly beach. With leash-off room to play some catch and socialize, this is a full day adventure to wear us out.

Waterford Beach, Hilton "Wag it at the Waterfront", offers a variety of amenities to both feline and canine companions, including pet beds, a feeding bowl, and custom selected treats. Pet sitting and a pet room-service menu are also available and can be arranged through hotel. "Our standard $50 pet fee is a per stay non-refundable fee".

Huntington Beach Central Park The website Stock Team is a great website on Central Park's rules as well as other activities for dogs around the Huntington Beach area.

Restaurants in Huntington beach  There are a lot of restaurants that cater to dogs with humans so you will easily find a lot to choose from. The Park Bench Cafe even has a doggie menu just for us and we can celebrate our birthday here! Oh, that reminds me, my birthday is coming up, someone tell my humans to take me here, I will order the Rover Easy.

Lake Powell Houseboating: Canine Style

Nothing says vacation like being with my family and friends, relaxing, having a bowl of fresh water, a few treats, and hanging by the lake. Well, I have told you before, I am not a water dog, so I am going to tell you about my little Cuz Rusty who LOVES all things water. That dude even loves to ride on the speed boat under the close supervision of his human and wearing his trusty, yet stylish, life jacket.

Rusty and his two brothers head out for a family house boat vacation every year for at least a week. Wow, that is one lucky pup. Many of the houseboats you can rent are dog-friendly, excluding the deluxe models. As long as you stay on a leash when you are off the boat and never be left unattended, it is smooth sailing with the boat patrol.

According to the Lake Powell website:
General Pet Policy: All Pets must be kept on a leash at all times when in public. Pets must never be left unattended. Guest must clean up after their own pets.
Houseboat Pet Policy: $10.00 per pet, per day fee charged and must be paid at time of boat pick-up. There is no limit as to how many pets.
Pets are not allowed on the 75' Odyssey, 75' Excursion, 62 journey.
Powerboat Pet Policy: Pets are allowed on the 19' Powerboats with no fee. Pets are allowed on the 36' Weekender. Pets are allowed on the 20' Ski Boats or 23' Centurians for a $10 non-refundable fee.

For those who are his fans, know that he was always spoiled and loved. His explorations with us are our fondest memories.
