Panama City Beach and Destin Florida

If you are like me and have never been to the Panhandle of Florida, you are in for as much of a shock as I had been. Of course, I have been to Orlando and quite a few of the beach cities in Florida. You know, the ones everyone talks about and a few songs have even been written about them. I love all of the activities in Orlando for families, but sometimes I really just want to go to Florida for the beaches.

So, we decided to hit Panama City and Destin in Florida. Many of my southern friends say it is where they went for beach stop-overs growing up. Well, let me tell you, this place is amazing!  I am totally shocked that we do not hear more about this area, but perhaps Mickey takes over a lot of talk in that state. What we found were the most beautiful white-powder sand beaches on which you can enjoy walking on barefoot. The sand can feels the closest to talc powder I have seen in a very long time. Miles and miles of white sand!

As for the locals, well they are oozing with southern charm. The people were very friendly and the food prices are reasonable. A few of the little restaurant bars boast beautiful sunset views, fantastic food, and in one in particular (Sharkys on Panama City Beach) we found a very talented one-man singer who serenaded us with some of the popular beach beats with a little country thrown in. There is plenty to do for the kids with quite a few outdoor putting amusement parks and a fantastic place called Wonderworks that can keep them entertained for hours on end. It is sort of a science museum meets amusement park. You have to see this place even if you do not bring the kids.

The difference I found between Panama City Beach and Destin is that Destin is a bit more upscale and has more shops and restaurants. Both have their own charm. Make sure to get a room with a beach view since it is really worth the extra money.

Just a heads up... Unless you are looking for a crazy party, do not go during spring break or bikers week.  These guys are just looking to have fun but the prices go way up and the streets become a party zone.

Welcome to Mayberry, North Carolina

There is a place in North Carolina, about 3 miles South of the Virginia state line, called Mount Airey and it literally is all things Mayberry. Since this is the place where Andy Griffith grew up, it stands to reason that it should feel like Mayberry.  A friend of mine told me about this gem and I could not believe a place like this actually existed. Sure enough it does!  They have an Andy Griffith Collection at his namesake Playhouse, rides in a Ford Galaxy that have been painted to resemble the one used in the show, a barbershop named Floyds, old fashion shops, and lots of events and activities that surround the good old days.

Sept 25-28, 2014 they have Mayberry Days.  This is a full festival for those longing for simplicity of days gone by. Enjoy a bottle of pop, play some checkers, watch the parade, and listen to some great music. Plan well in advance to make sure you can get a great hotel. This would make a memorable anniversary idea for your parents or grandparents with fun for the whole family!
Now, if you can't get to Mayberry, you can always go on their website and send yourself a postcard like I did for my picture. They have plenty to choose from.

We made our own postcard right on the Mayberry website. If you can't go to Mayberry you can always make one of your own on their Mount Airey website.

Thanks Mary for your recommendation!

Looking for something truly unique? Well, how about checking out the Labyrinth of Jareth Masquerade Ball that takes place July 4th and 5th in Los Angeles! Just what is the Labyrinth of Jareth Masquerade Ball? According to their website information:

"The Labyrinth of Jareth is a Masquerade Ball based on Venetian tradition, Celtic faerie and goblin lore, and stories of fantasy and wonder. Lost within the borders of chaos and light, nobles dance among the Fae while goblins wait with hungry eyes in the wings of their court. Some of the most amazing fantasy artists, costumers and special effects crews participate in bringing a diverse host of creatures and mythologies alive each year. This Masquerade is one of the few classical events open to ANYONE who has dreamed of a surrealistic fantasy fading into a single night of dance and revelry. Music and visuals heighten your senses as the night shields the Goblin Court and the chambers surrounding it. . . Celebrating our Sixteenth masquerade and pooling together all that we've learned, the artists of Sypher Studios continue to proudly offer this night to those with the imagination and heart to enjoy it. Within the Royal Court: We offer a night of music, art, entertainment, faerie revels and enchantment among the elements and the Goblin Courts"

What a great way to spend a few days exploring the of mystical magic of the make-believe. This event will be their seventeenth ball.
Costumes fitting their theme and masks are required.
