Pass Your Family Recipes

A couple of years back, I went to a cooking class and the chef said something that I never forgot. Basically, he said that there is nothing sadder then having a secret family recipe die with the family member that created it.  That stuck with me and prompted me to write my own family my secret recipe book. What I had realized is that, while it is great to have that one recipe that my family loved and that only I could create, that food brings comfort to families, and just the sense of taste and the smells associated with the food can bring back fond memories. I would want my family to still have those fond memories. So I went online to one of the discount photo book makers, made recipe book, and made copies for everyone in my family.

In my recipe book, I put the recipe along with a picture of whom the recipe was handed down from with a picture of them as well as a small clip about my memories of when they made it. For example, my dad loved making his favorite Torpedoes and I cooked them often with him and then eventually for him. I had a picture of him that I placed in the book and a brief write up about how he made them. (He use to make one super hot torpedo and you never knew which one it was until you bit into it so it was sort of a game-style dinner). My mother was born in Ireland and she had a unique way of making her Bubble and Squeak, so I put a picture of her and what the dinner meant to her.

Be creative and consider including some of your other family members to include their special recipes and put a picture of them with it.  If you have an older family member that does not write on the computer but has that amazing recipe that you must have, see if he or she has the recipe written in his or her handwriting, and take a picture of it, and put the picture in your recipe book.  I cherish the recipe my mother wrote by hand of her famous cheesecake. Seeing her
writing brings back fond memories for me as well.

Surprise Date

"Kidnap" your date before they usually get up, preferably sunrise, (depending on the activity planned) and only let them put on their shoes with their pajamas, (or maybe slippers since you can always pre-purchase some fuzzy animal ones!) If your date is not comfortable heading out in their night clothes, use a three minute change rule or offer a long coat to go over their pajamas.

Have a picnic breakfast at a nearby park or quiet area (donuts, bagels, fruit, juice, or maybe bring champagne for mimosas if you are over 21 and alcohol is allowed there).  Your date can end there of course, but you can consider adding on depending how daring your "victim" is.  I don't suggest taking a very conservative or quiet person to the mall in pajamas, since that can turn the dream date into a nightmare, but if they are adventurous maybe hit a movie or drive around and find the perfect house you would want to some day wake up in.

Make sure to get permission beforehand from any roommates or parents.

What's on your Bucket List?

Every once in a while, a life event causes us to take a good look at those things we want to achieve or do in our lives. Many people start a bucket list. This list can be activities that are easy to accomplish like writing a fan letter to a favorite star, or can be full of expensive items like buying a pair of Christian Loubitan shoes.  Some may have dreams that can take them to that special place they have always wanted to visit, so don't just write your ideas down, they all are worth a second thought. Bucket lists can go hand in hand with your ThemeTrip plans. Enjoy your bucket list, have fun with your ideas, and, above all, be creative and ready to try a few out!

If your Bucket List includes places you would like to visit or things you would like to do, I hope our website has helped you find those unique travel spots to see and also has opened you up to some new, exciting, and fun possible adventures. However....

There is another website, Nina's Bucket list, that was founded by a family very close to ours that can help with giving you some items for your own Bucket List.  Her story is best left to their website to explain, but it is a great list of ideas that were on her very own Bucket List. Check it out and over the next few months we will try and follow a few of her items and turn them into a ThemeTrip so you can have ideas on how to fulfill some of your own. Maybe #185 the Float on the Nile trip. That could be fun!

Finger Paint Date

Trying to come up with a quick and easy date idea? What about a finger paint date.  Pick up some finger paints, a cheap canvas or poster board, and easels, if possible. If you cannot locate an easel then don't worry, you can put the canvas in your lap and paint.

Head out to your nearest park, add in a few snacks and drinks, and then commence to painting. Obviously, you do not have to be talented or creative to participate. Just have fun pretending to professionally paint your surroundings with your finger paints. Bring sponges to make textures or use some of the leaves or branches you find. You can create your art separately or you can make make one masterpiece together by taking only one canvas. To spend a few hours just having fun, bring construction paper packs so you can go through as many as you like. Don't forget to bring wet wipes for after to clean up your hands and maybe an apron or old shirts while painting.
