High Ropes and Trust Falls

6/26/2014

I remember the very first time I had to do a trust fall. It was at a teen retreat when I was in high school. Now, if you don't know what a trust fall is, it is when you have to fall backwards and hope the people you are with don't let you fall. This activity it is designed to build trust in a community.

This trust fall has now been built to a much higher height (I mean a really high height!). There are a few great companies out there that have taken this concept to the extreme and built high ropes walks and pole climbing (where you have to stand on top of the pole with no rails to hold onto). Now you do have a harness that they can securely bring you down with, if you fall, and your team belaying you, thus the TRUST factor.  I went to a high rope course with my "at risk" group of which I am a mentor. We headed out in the early morning and spent a whole day trying to help each other over walls, walking on a beam and helping each other not fall, climbing up what looks like a telephone pole, and last, walking across a high ropes course designed to scare the heck right out of you. The purpose is to encourage you to work as a team to complete the challenge and to build each others trust. I loved it!

I actually think this should be a prerequisite to those couples engaged to see how they could work together under pressure. Heck, this would be a great engagement gift. As for the teens, this would make a great family activity with them because face it, you would be totally cool and, of course, sometimes teens need to remember that their parents are the ones they should always trust when they are in a jam.

There are many rope courses around the US but here is one.

If you have ever considered being a mentor and you live in Arizona you can check out the Phoenix New Pathways program. Most other states have Youths At Risk programs as well.

What is this Animal?

I stumbled upon a great website that I want to pass on to all the parents, teachers, and caregivers in reader land. It is called Project Noah.

Project Noah is an interactive website where participants can learn about wildlife and contribute to scientific research! You can download or just view images on your smartphone of adorable (or creepy) photos of animals, bugs, birds, reptiles and even fungi. The images are categorized and placed on a map to tell the readers where they are located.  I Love This Website! It is a great example of an educational website that may encourage a future scientist, zoologist, or entomologist in your family.

This would be one of those reasons you would not mind your kids on the phone playing and sending photos. Visit the www.projectnoah.org website for more info.

Clothes and More Swap

This can be a fun day idea for a girls' get-together or even an activity for teens.  The best part about this activity is that the clothes you no longer wear or the items you no longer use to decorate with, someone else will have the opportunity to enjoy, and you get new items for FREE!

Keep it simple and fun. Invite your friends over and have everyone put their items in a pile.  You can set a limit or a minimum on the amount of items everyone should bring to the event.  Then, each person takes a turn going to the pile and picking out something to take home. You can pick out something for yourself or for someone else.

Make sure and take pictures to capture the fun. If it is kids involved in the clothing swap, set up a mini runway for them.  The adults can snap the pictures.  Not only is this a great way to recycle old items, it also helps you clean out your closet. Any left-over items can be donated to a thrift store at the end.

Make a Dress-up Trunk

When my daughter was growing up she loved playing dress up. Not so much with pretty clothing, but with make-believe accessories and costumes that allowed her to become anything her mind could create.  The problem I ran into was finding a place to keep the all of the stuff we had collected when she wasn't playing with it.

Instead of it occupying her closet or drawer space, we decorated an inexpensive old trunk and filled it with all kinds of costumes, (you know, all the costumes you've stored from previous Halloweens?  If not, check out local garage sales.  We found vintage clothing and accessories for pennies on the dollar. We even picked up a few unique costumes).  I also cleaned out my closet and threw in the "what were you thinking buying that" clothes that still had tags on them, along with some old favorites that I didn't wear anymore.  Double points for cleaning out my own closet and not feeling guilty getting rid of things that were overtaking my closet.  We added in silly accessories and hats, and let her play to her heart's content. The best part about having the trunk already filled up was that she could play with it anytime she wanted and then the items tucked neatly back into her adorable trunk, out of the way.

Making your own trunk is pretty easy and really not as expensive as you might think.  Most Targets and Wal-Marts carry them in all kinds of colors and sizes. They are usually found under the term "storage trunk".  We used an old beat up white trunk we found at a garage sale for a couple of dollars that matched her room at the time and decorated it with pinks and whites.   If  it's a boy your making a trunk for, he might like one of the superhero wallpapers.   When you are ready to decorate, choose a pre-glued wallpaper in a pattern that you feel would match the room décor you are putting it in.  Cut the paper to fit all sides and stick it down.  Start from one corner and peel the back away as you place it down. If the paper comes up or rolls at the ends, use glitter glue or another colored glue to stick it down while dressing it up.  You can hide tiny flaws in your measurements that way.

We used the same glitter glue to write her name on the top. If you are really creative then you might consider putting some lace around the edges to dress it up.  If your uncomfortable working with wallpaper, use a themed duct tape.  Duct tape now has an endless supply of patterns and themes. They stick well,  so it makes a great craft material.  You can find them at most Michaels and discount department stores. If your own kids are past the age of playing dress up, a costume trunk makes a great keepsake gift for birthdays or holidays.

Our trunk has lasted more then fifteen years now.  It doesn't contain the dress up clothes that she played with in her youth, now it holds her special baby items and the crafts she made for us throughout the years. It may be a bit old and the wallpaper is slightly discolored, but the memories in it and the memories made from watching her play with it are priceless!

If you choose a wheeled storage trunk to decorate instead of a regular one, you can wheel it back in the closet or the garage when it's not in use.  As of this posting I found a wheeled storage trunk for $38 on Wal-Mart's website.  Check out garage sales for vintage ones. Since you will be decorating them, it will not matter if the one you purchase has some damage. Decorate over it.
