In-a-day activity provided by Maureen @ MB Events in Arizona.

Are you looking for a way to occupy your teenagers for the day? This is a great activity for teens, preteens, girls and boys alike! This would be perfect in the eyes of a teenager because it moves action-to- action which is  a great way to keep them busy and off of their phones!  With the weather being so perfect in the state of Arizona, amongst many others nationwide, you need to embrace the beauty that surrounds you. Start off your day with an early outdoor adventure. This may include hopping on a bike and riding the trails on South Mountain or renting ATVs from Arizona Outdoor Fun and exploring the terrain. Whatever you do, get your blood pumping! Make sure to pack plenty of water! It took me five years in the Arizona desert to realize that I need to drink even when I am not thirsty.

From your  outdoor adventure, you can head on home for the part that the teens will enjoy the most- they can have friends over! Here is where the party planner in me takes over! Be the hostest with the mostest and put together a sports-themed get together for your teen and their friends. If you set up activities to keep them busy like ping pong, pool, swimming, basketball, volleyball, air hockey or similar games, the kids will be up and moving the whole time.  As far as food, shape the goodies around sports themed items. You can serve “Dodger Dogs” mimicking the infamous LA Dodger hot dogs, guacamole dip that looks like a football field, baseball and basketball shaped cookies, plus easy to eat items that you can put a sports-themed spin on. Decorations will be easy! Hang up a few do-it-yourself banners and stick to primary colors.

After a day like this, you will be the #1 Mom or Dad in the scorebooks!

Arizona Outdoor Fun has ATV rentals if you are in Arizona.

Hiking Tips- Join a club or make your own

My good friend Rick is an avid hiker and rock climber. Most weekends you can find him exploring all different types of terrain around Arizona. Usually, he will send out Facebook posts about upcoming trips, or send out a text inviting people to join. Exploring your immediate surrounding areas can be inexpensive and a great day or weekend trip.  You can join an existing hiking club, get together with a group of friends, or, if your a die hard Pittsburg Steelers fan, you might get lucky to be invited by Rick.

Most states have a lot of private land that is available to explore and hiking can be a great day activity for families or a perfect date idea. There are a few rules to being prepared and careful when you set out to explore unknown areas. Make sure that you take basic provisions, follow a known trail, never hike alone, and keep the distance to a minimum if you are a beginner hiker since this is an activity that’s best done with quality over quantity. Don’t forget, never drink out of a river or stream because they can be loaded with bacteria no matter how pretty and clear they are. Be aware of your hydration. In less than an hour, depending on the temperatures, you can become dehydrated and get heat stroke. Heat stroke can be life threatening. Always check out websites that give advice on hiking safety tips before heading out.

Geo-caching

Geo-caching is the latest and greatest craze. My sister swears by it and actually had the whole family out searching last Christmas after the gifts were opened. There is no really heavy cost to playing this game other then gas to go place to place. All you need to do is download the app to your phone and find a few very inexpensive items to replace the items you trade during your hunt.

As you can see by the picture, some of the geocaches just have papers in them that you sign to say you found it and then put it back, others you can exchange the small token inside for one of your own. Just a warning, some Geocaches are very big, and some are super tiny and can be disguised as screws or bolts on a lamppost, so you have to be ready to poke at things to see if they are real.
It is a cheap way to get the whole family involved for a problem-solving adventure. Go to the Geocaching website
or download their app and set your path.

Make sure you pack a tools-of-the-trade bag to include a pen, tweezers, a small mirror,  gloves, and a stick to tap at things to see if they are the geo-cache. You must always replace the token you swap, so make sure you bring things like stickers, gumball style toys, or anything that represents your family.

Be cautious in areas with snakes and other venomous creatures and bugs and stay clear of anything on private property. You will be amazed at how many geo-caches there are. Young and old enjoy this treasure hunt.
