Father and Son Building-Time

Father and Son bonding time is an important opportunity to not only spend some valuable time together, but to also allow your son to learn how to safely use tools. Some of the projects they can work on can be easy, with simple materials like a paper boat to sail in the closest body of water, (yes, a bathtub will do) to a more grand project like a box car racer or a tree house.

First, consider the age of your child. Is his attention span long enough for a week long project or will a few hours and then success be better spent quality time? If you are lucky enough to have multiple generations in your household (or even a grandparents visit), make sure to include grandpa. I did a bit of research on the internet and found some of the best answers that can help you on your chosen project.

On Wikihow we found:
Make a soapbox derby car
Build a tree house
Make a paper boat

It looks like WikiHow really wins on their in depth explanations on building!

Dairy Farm Tours

A few weeks ago, my inbox pinged with an idea from one of our readers asking us to tour one of our local Dairy farms, (Yes, we read them all, some we can do right away, while others take a bit more planning).  I thought, "wow, what a great idea" and I promptly began to scope out this gem of recommendation for us.

What we found was that there are many different types of working dairies around the country and each offers its very own, unique experience. Some are more interactive than others, so you would get a lot out of visiting different ones as opposed to just sticking to one.  Some dairies have tours, petting zoos, restaurants, picnic areas, hay rides around the dairy, and a few are even hands on.  I have found a few across the country such as Dakin Dairy Farms and Shamrock Farms that do tours, but there are many more, so explore to your hearts content

Horse Races

Horse racing is an equestrian sport that has a very long history. Some records indicate that mounted horse riding events were actually in the Greek Olympics in 648 BC. Attending the horse races can be a nice family event as well as a date idea. Most tracks have clubhouses that serve food and you can bring your binoculars to see the race just like you see in movies. Besides the clubhouse, there is also grand-stand seating where you can  enjoy concession-style food and walk near the track to see the horses up close as they are brought out to show.  Now, you do not have to gamble at these events and can simply enjoy the show; however, they have bidding as low as $2. Most people never think about the races until the Kentucky Derby, but there is a road to the Kentucky derby filled with those horses, (or should I say horse owners)  that can only dream of joining the elite as a triple threat some day.

For a list of upcoming races check out the All Horse Racing website.

If
you can't reach a racetrack, check out the televised ones and throw your own race party at home:
